Phi Cabinet

10/14/2015

This cabinet has five dividers that space the drawers and the cabinet area. The dividers are called "web frames" that are mortised into the tall legs. Here I've shaped one of the the hinge mortises--There are two doors so there are 8 of these mortises needed. I do it now when the web frames are free because it would be difficult to do it after the cabinet is glued together.

Here's the first test fit. Some adjustments are needed but it's dang close. I need three hands for this!

Here I inset 1/4" cherry panels within the lower web frame of the cabinet. This will be the bottom web.

The top web frame is outside the cabinet so I inset a clear 1/4" cherry panel. In this case I allowed the panel to sit proud of the top about 1/16" and rounded over the edge to give a "pillow" effect and some nice shadow lines.

Ok I'm changing the "name" of this cabinet to the "Phi Cabinet" because many of my projects are Krenov inspired! As I mentioned before, all of the dimensions in this cabinet are phi multiples--the amazing ratio (1.618...) that derives from the natural ratio between circles and squares and repeated throughout nature.
Here is a beautiful 8/4 cherry board. It's always a somewhat emotional moment to saw into a board like this. I don't do it easily! Here I am taking about 19" to be resewed into back panels. The knot makes this good rear area material. I recently tuned my bandsaw after one of the bearings failed. It works as sweet as ever. I easily got four, 1/4" panels...

This is one of the five web frames that give structure to this cabinet. The key issue here, as always, is achieving a consistent tight connection. Careful layout lines and a sublime bandsaw does the trick.
